Our Process: Clay, Wheel, Glaze
- This tiny bud vase was made using the traditional wheel-throwing technique, a method that demands precision and patience—especially at this scale. Each one begins with a large ball of stoneware clay, centered carefully on the wheel by hand. The mini is thrown on the top of the mound in a method called “throwing from the hump”. The form is then pulled and shaped into its plump, rounded silhouette with a narrow neck and gently open mouth.
- Once the piece is leather-hard, wiped smooth, and bisque-fired in our kiln. It’s then dipped in our custom blue-grey glaze, a formulation developed in-house through years of small-batch testing and refinement. Final firing brings out its soft gradients and deep inner sheen. Each vase is a reflection of the potter’s hand and the kiln’s unique touch.
- Each bud vase is handcrafted in our studio in Jaroso, Colorado, nestled in the wide, open plains of the San Luis Valley. Sarah Welch Pottery has been a family-run business for over 25 years, beginning as a solo venture and evolving into a small but thriving team of well trained assistants. Sarah Welch, trained in ceramics has spent decades building a collection of pottery that honors both utility and artistry.
- As our studio grew, we expanded into multiple brands—including Hidden Garden Pots for plant lovers, Bronze Pottery for heirloom gifts and Copitas de Mezcal for barware. Our core principals always remain the same: handcrafting meaningful objects with intention, patience, and love. Every piece carries the story of where it was made, and who made it.

- Please Note: Each Vase is Unique
- Due to the handmade nature of this miniature vase, subtle differences in size, glaze color, and shape will occur from piece to piece. These variations are intentional and reflect the authenticity of hand-thrown pottery. When you receive your vase, know that it is the only one quite like it in the world.
